I'm in week 2 of my new job at PCPL as Youth Services Department Manager. This week was my first week without my trainer by my side. I placed my first book order, created fun programs for the next 2 weeks, and began the evaluation for the transfer of the materials in the department. What should stay and what should be stored is a difficult challenge, so I'll save it for next week (1,000 books sounds like a lot, but it will only take up one shelf). However, I have created a rough sketch of how the Kiwanis Room, our temporary location, will look with the materials. The room is 1/3 the size of the actual department. My awesome staff and I will have to make do with less room, but still must make space for computer stations, storytime station, our work desk, and "short stacks" for the collection that makes the cut. Oh, and I can't forget about our stuffed elephant (does he have a name?).
This is the current children's room. In two short weeks, this space will no longer be a destination for enhancing and exploring your imagination. In five weeks, it will no longer be accessible to patrons or staff. Like a band-aid, the reconstruction process will be short, somewhat painful, but the immediate relief will be so much more worthwhile.
Stay tuned for more highlights of this experience of a new position in a new world.
